HearEase for Small Ears: Hearing Aids for Children in Uganda

HearEase for Small Ears: Hearing Aids for Children in Uganda

Because Every Child Deserves to Hear the World

In 2023 and 2024, a heartbreaking reality came to light: hundreds of children in Uganda’s Luwero District were struggling with hearing loss — most of them in silence. Many of these children are orphans or come from families too poor to afford hearing aids. Their hearing difficulties severely limit their ability to learn, communicate, and connect with others.

At SDC e. V., we couldn’t stand by. That’s why we launched HearEase for Small Ears — a life-changing project that aims to give children back their ability to hear, grow, and thrive.

What We've Done So Far

Together with local schools and health centers, we conducted a needs assessment and screened over 300 children and young people for hearing impairments. The results were clear: 48 children urgently need at least one hearing aid.

To deliver the most professional and cost-effective support, we partnered with Dr. Ismael Byaruhanga, a clinical audiologist and PhD student at the University of Cologne, and his non-profit WOCHI (Women, Child and Health Initiative). Dr. Byaruhanga has a strong track record in sustainable health projects in East Africa and is deeply committed to improving the lives of children with disabilities.

Behind every statistic is a child with dreams, waiting to be heard.

What the HearEase Project Aims to Achieve?

We aim to provide 48 children aged 2 to 17 with custom-fitted hearing aids — giving them a new chance at communication, learning, and inclusion.

But we’re doing more than just fitting devices. We’re creating long-term impact by:

  1. Offering professional audiological assessments for each child
  2. Training teachers and parents to support hearing-impaired children
  3. Providing follow-up care and adjustments to ensure lasting benefits
  4. Promoting awareness and inclusion in the community

How We Help – Our Medical and Educational Approach

Each child receives a complete diagnostic evaluation, including:

  1. Otoscopy
  2. Tympanometry
  3. Pure-tone audiometry (PTA)
  4. Speech audiometry

Based on these results, we fit each child with tailored bilateral hearing aids. We focus on quality and longevity to ensure that the devices serve the children for years to come.

We also organize workshops for parents and teachers to ensure the children are supported in their everyday lives — at home, at school, and in the community. Regular follow-ups and maintenance ensure optimal performance of each device.

Budget and Financial Needs

To fully implement this project, we need €25,500. These funds will cover:

  1. Purchase and fitting of hearing aids
  2. Diagnostic screenings and follow-up care
  3. Fees for audiologists and trainers
  4. Training workshops for parents and teachers
  5. Monitoring, logistics, and minimal administrative costs

SDC e. V. will cover part of the project costs through its own contribution, including coordination and long-term support through SDC Africa.

Long-Term Vision: A Sustainable Hearing Health Solution

We believe in solutions that last. That’s why:

  1. The project is integrated into local health and education systems
  2. We’re training local professionals, parents, and teachers
  3. Community outreach fosters understanding, empathy, and inclusion
  4. We guarantee ongoing battery supply and device maintenance through a local network

Through collaboration with WOCHI and local health centers, we’re building a foundation for lasting change in how hearing loss is diagnosed, treated, and understood.
